Ballet des Passion
How do we know that a relationship is significant to us? The first answer that comes to mind is the intensity of our feelings. This can be observed in how we approach our loved ones—but also in how we respond to people we would rather avoid. Sometimes, even those closest to us can make our emotional lives difficult. The path from love to hatred can be surprisingly short. Conversely, sadness caused by longing for someone can instantly turn into overwhelming joy upon seeing them again. Moreover, staying emotionally close to someone can also affect the relationship we have with ourselves.
All these emotional turbulences are the focus of Ballet des Passions, an innovative project by Varsavia Galante. The 17th-century structure of a theatrical performance—consisting of five acts and a prologue—serves as a framework for a universal story about the relationship between two people. Each act of the ballet reveals a different emotional dynamic between them. The narrative unfolds in a non-linear way, making the scenes feel reminiscent or even dreamlike. The dancers portray emotions both realistically and abstractly, all set to deeply emotional French Baroque music. The timeless message of the ballet is further emphasized by the use of minimalist black costumes.
